Trauma-Informed Dual-Diagnosis Approach

On the climb to adulthood, some young men stumble onto the wrong path. Substance abuse and the behavioral changes that accompany it are terrifying and disturbing for family members and peers to witness. Yet, it’s all just the external expression of deeper issues far beneath the surface. Comprehensive dual-diagnosis addiction treatment at Red Oak Recovery® helps young men heal from the inside out and for the long run.

Our young men’s addiction treatment is structured around instilling six core values in our clients:

Hope

Courage

Willingness

Integrity

Spirituality

Service

when is addiction treatment necessary?

Whether you are struggling with addiction yourself or watching a loved one misuse substances, it can be hard to know when it’s time for treatment. Sometimes, the legal system, school board, or employer may make the decision for you. No matter where you are in your journey, know this: You don’t have to wait until you hit rock bottom to get help. If you believe that your life or your loved one’s life could be easier and better without drugs or alcohol, that’s a start. Reach out and we can continue the conversation.

what is dual-diagnosis addiction treatment?

Substance use disorder and other mental health disorders are closely linked. For example, studies show that more than one third of adults with substance use disorder also suffer from a mental illness. For many, drugs and alcohol are a desperate attempt at self-medicating issues like PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Addiction is often the tragic end result.

However, despite the prevalence of dual diagnoses (also known as comorbidities) many treatment options still focus on one primary concern. In fact, a Pew Research Center study found that only 1 in 10 adults seeking treatment for substance use disorder or a mental health disorder received treatment for their comorbidities. Sadly, solving one half of the problem is not solving the problem at all. Relapse and recurring treatment instances are fueled by this insufficient treatment.

At Red Oak Recovery®, we believe that peak recovery comes from deep, holistic healing. That’s why all of our clinicians are dually licensed for mental health and substance use disorder, and we approach all treatment plans with an awareness of and concern for comorbid conditions. what about trauma?

Today, we know that substance use disorder is often tied to underlying emotional trauma. According to one federal study, nearly half of the American adults in substance use disorder treatment reported experiencing trauma in their past. More than two thirds of children surveyed in another federal study reported experiencing a traumatic incident prior to the age of 16.

Trauma may not be what you expect. Experiences like war, abuse, and assault certainly qualify, but trauma is really defined as any experience that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope. Many young men aren’t even aware of the trauma that fuels their emotions and actions.

At Red Oak, our entire community is trauma-informed and built to accommodate the delicate self-exploration and deep work that is trauma healing. Therapists are trained in modalities such as EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), which has been shown to have above a 90% success rate in treating PTSD.

what about the 12 steps?

Red Oak Recovery® is centered on a robust treatment program of clinical work, supplemented by transformative experiences. While not a 12 Step program, we do integrate the 12 Steps into client treatment as appropriate — both to introduce clients to a vital recovery tool and to meet each client where they are in the process of recovery.

We realize that in order for recovery to be a life-long commitment to mindful living, the approach must be fluid, open, and totally non-judgmental. Accordingly, our clients are invited to take those aspects of 12 Step recovery that resonate with them, and leave the rest. We create an environment where personal boundaries are not infringed upon and where genuine trust can be built so that the process of recovery and transformation is rooted in each individual’s personal path.

We do hold 12 Step meetings within our own space to familiarize our clients with the teachings of the 12 Steps and the structure of typical meetings. Clients may also travel in small groups to off-campus meetings during their stay. Our leadership team, clinical technicians, therapists, and team members strive to uphold and reinforce 12 step principles in their day-to-day actions and interactions with others, modeling for our clients the essence of an authentic life in recovery.
