If you’re new to the world of recovery, congratulations! You are taking steps to live the life you and your family deserve. At Red Oak Recovery’s addiction treatment center in NC, we’re proud to help our clients learn the coping skills for addiction recovery and help them stay on the path to a sober, healthy life. Let’s take a look at some of the coping skills that can make it a little bit easier to stay sober.
Coping Skills For Addiction Recovery
When you decide to make a change in your life and seek treatment, you’ll need to learn new skills to cope with the stress of everyday life. Beating addiction requires you to change the way you handle stress and tough situations. No matter how badly you want to stop drug or alcohol use, you’ll need new coping strategies in place to be successful. People who are in recovery can use several different coping skills to deal with stress, including:
- Stress management – Finding new ways to handle stress is one of the many key coping skills for addiction recovery. You will need to explore what stress management options work best for you. Some people in recovery find exercise to be helpful. Others find that engaging in a hobby, such as cooking, allows them to refocus their mind when stress-induced cravings hit.
- Meditation – If you’ve been using drugs and/ or alcohol to quiet your mind, the idea of sitting in silence with your thoughts can be terrifying. Meditation takes practice, and it can be a helpful tool in teaching your brain to relax. There’s no need to start with long periods. Sitting with your thoughts for as long as 60 seconds can be helpful.
- Grounding – Grounding is a way of pausing racing thoughts to notice your environment. Finding five things that are a certain color, or noticing what’s going on with each of your five senses are great ways to pull yourself out of anxious or stressful thoughts and back to reality.
