The most current mental illness statistics reveal millions of men who have an addiction also have a mental health disorder. However, most men do not realize they have a disorder. Nor do they see the connection between their mental health disorder and their addiction to drugs or alcohol.

Addiction treatment specialists at a men’s treatment center program in NC understand what type of care is necessary for a lasting recovery. They also aid in removing the stigma often associated with addiction and treatment. Below is a brief summary of some of the latest mental illness statistics in young adult men. For more information on these statistics or our addiction treatment programs, please contact Red Oak Recovery today at 866.457.7590.

Where Do the Latest Statistics Come From?

Several agencies across the United States gather data to help us gain a better understanding of mental illness. These agencies include:

  • Substance Abuse and Mental health Services Administration (SAMSHA)
  • Center for Disease Control (CDC)
  • U.S. Department of Justice
  • National Institute of Health (NIH)
  • National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)

Most of the mental illness statistics below come from one of these sources. In addition, some of the country’s leading universities, such as Harvard, Yale, Boston College, George Washington, and Clemson, contribute data.

The Essential Statistics

Here are four United States mental illness statistics that you should know:

  • 1 in 5 men are diagnosed with a mental illness every year
  • 1 in 25 men are diagnosed with a severe/debilitating mental illness every year
  • One out of six young men age 6-17 years have some type of mental disorder
  • Suicide is the second leading cause of young men age 10-34

Mental health disorders may include anxiety, depression, bipolar disease, borderline personality disorder, ADHD, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In many cases, these mental health conditions go undiagnosed or untreated until later in life.

Addiction and Substance Use

Mental illness statistics often include substance use. As such, addiction treatment centers in Asheville, NC, include dual diagnosis treatment as a part of their treatment plan. Some statistics about co-occurring disorders include:

  • 3.7% of young men who have a mental disorder also have a substance use disorder
  • Co-occurring mental illness and substance use occur in 1 out of 8 emergency room visits
  • High school students with a mental health disorder are twice as likely as their peers to have a long-term addiction to drugs or alcohol
  • 20% of homeless people in the U.S., including young men, have both a mental health disorder and a drug or alcohol addiction
  • Co-occurring disorders cost the U.S. over $600 billion annually, including treatment for both addiction and mental health disorders

Many of these statistics regarding mental illnesses only account for those who have sought treatment for their condition. Thus, they do not accurately address the millions of young men who are unaware of their mental illness or have not sought help for addiction. As a result, the cost of addiction, both economic and non-economic, is not fully known.
