Losing control over your drinking can be scary. Even if going out to the bar or sharing some drinks with a friend was once a way to have fun or blow off some steam, when you stop being able to slow down or quit drinking once you stop, you might feel like it’s out of your hands. If you live with alcohol use disorder (AUD), it’s hard to quit drinking on your own. Getting help could be the best thing you do for your health, relationships, and future. Red Oak Recovery® provides alcohol addiction treatment and other rehab programs exclusively for men at our campus in Western North Carolina.
Alcohol Addiction Can Affect Anyone
Loading…
Millions of people struggle with alcohol addiction. In 2023, 28.9 million people lived with alcohol use disorder; more of them were men than women. Addiction does not discriminate against race or income, though some groups of people are disproportionately exposed to risk factors for developing addiction. If you struggle with addiction, you’re not alone, and help is available.
When to Find Help
Binge drinking, constant or consistent drinking, or drinking without caring about negative things that happen are all signs that it’s time to get help. Other signs that you or a loved one is struggling with alcohol include:
- Changes in behavior or mood: You might notice that someone you care about is isolated, moody, angry, or unreasonable when they’re drinking.
- Changes in physical health: Alcohol abuse can lead to serious health problems and worsen existing medical conditions. If your loved one is having a hard time sleeping, gaining or losing weight, or has noticeable redness of the face or nose, it could be a sign that they’re drinking too much.
- Changes in social habits: Addiction will take over someone’s life. Someone who was once outgoing and sociable might start missing work, school, family events, or hanging out with friends because they want to drink alone—away from the judgment of others—instead.
Asking for help isn’t easy. Addiction can make you feel ashamed, alone, and hopeless. But alcohol addiction treatment can teach you how to make changes in your life, support you as you enter recovery, and give you the tools you need to continue moving forward.

How Treatment at Red Oak Works
Red Oak’s alcohol addiction rehab program provides comprehensive, personalized support to every man we help. Many of our clients benefit from a combination of medication-assisted treatment (MAT), behavioral therapy, group support, and support for co-occurring mental health issues.
Medication-Assisted Treatment
When you stop drinking, you’ll experience withdrawal symptoms. This is the result of your body and brain trying to function properly after being changed by drinking. Medication-assisted treatment allows licensed professionals to prescribe medications that treat withdrawal symptoms—which can sometimes be severe and dangerous—as well as cravings that you’ll experience after you quit drinking. Our staff will work closely with you to find the right medications for your unique needs and circumstances. MAT is not right for everyone, but it can be a safe, effective part of treatment for many people.
Behavioral Therapy
Quitting alcohol is a major step and one you should be proud of. To maintain your progress, when faced with triggers, challenges, and negative feelings, you need to have strategies for coping. Red Oak Recovery® provides many different evidence-based therapies that help our clients develop the skills and changes they need to overcome their addiction. These include:
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
- Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
- Motivational interviewing (MI)
- Rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT)
Other evidence-based talk therapies may be more effective for you; our treatment staff will work closely with you to find the right mix of therapies. Men at our center also engage in experiential programs, like equine and wilderness therapies, that help them reconnect with their sense of purpose.
Group Support
Connection and community are major parts of successful recovery. That’s why group therapy and support groups are major parts of our program at Red Oak. Men find that it’s sometimes hard to talk about their addiction with people who have never experienced what they’re going through. In group therapy, you’ll be able to share your story and hear from others facing similar challenges.
Mental Health Treatment
People struggling with their mental health sometimes turn to alcohol as a way to cope. On the other hand, many who struggle with alcohol have a hard time with their mental health, which can make quitting drinking even harder. We provide treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions, like anxiety, depression, and trauma, in addition to treating addiction.
